Hate Mail – Custom Typography & Album Artwork Design

Introduction / Project Overview

For this project, I collaborated with Whitney Ward, lead singer of Hate Mail, to develop a bold, impactful typography design for their latest album artwork. The goal was to create a clean, striking text layout that complemented the album’s visual aesthetic while maintaining a strong brand presence.

This project focused on font selection, text placement, and subtle enhancements, ensuring the typography worked seamlessly within the overall design.

Challenge & Concept Development

The challenge was to craft a typographic style that:
- Reflected the band's identity—bold, edgy, and refined
- Maintained clarity and visual balance within the artwork
- Integrated seamlessly with the overall design without overpowering it

Whitney and I discussed various font styles, focusing on ones that would stand out while staying legible. We also explored subtle stylistic effects to enhance the text without making it overly decorative.

Research & Discovery

To ensure the typography aligned with Hate Mail’s branding, I:

- Curated and tested multiple fonts that fit the band’s aesthetic.

- Refined text placement and sizing for maximum impact.

- Explored minor stylistic enhancements, such as subtle text effects, to create a polished final look.

This phase was crucial in determining the right balance of style, readability, and visual harmony within the album design.

Design & Development

Using Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, I worked through multiple design iterations, refining the typography styling, layout, and visual balance to ensure it enhanced the album’s overall aesthetic.

Key design steps included:
- Selecting and customizing the perfect font to match Hate Mail’s visual identity.
- Optimizing text placement and spacing for a cohesive composition.
- Exploring subtle enhancements, such as mild texture or glow effects, to add depth.
- Finalizing the typography to ensure it worked across both digital and print formats.

Finalization & Feedback

After refining the design, I worked closely with Whitney to ensure the final typography met the band’s vision. The end result was a bold, professional text treatment that seamlessly fit within the album artwork, enhancing its overall impact.
